The jam starts in the locked square in the middle of the board so has to be matched to start to spread it.
The purple candies are useful if you can get any combos, but often there are not many falling. Work as close to the bottom as you can to create cascades and this will bring down more purple candies..
One purple colour bomb pattern will just about cover the whole board in jam provided at least one of the candies is in the jam.
Otherwise just make as many combos as you can to get the jam spreading.
