Don't worry too much about the jam, it will take care of itself. You need to clear the blockers at the bottom or you won't be able to spread the jam anyway, so work on that and let the jam spread as you work.
Remember the fish will go for the blockers if they are not carrying jam so use them while you can. Once the jam starts to spread the fish will leave the blockers and go for the empty squares, so won't help much.
As always the bottom corners are the hardest so anything that gets down into those is worth using.
Look at the whole board before every move and try to work as close to the bottom of the board as you can to take advantage of cascades.
