Work at the bottom of the board as much as possible to take advantage of cascades, you'll be surprised at how many cupcakes are destroyed without even trying.
But at the same time you must be always looking for chances to make special candies and combos.
Once you have a bit more space to work make colour bomb/stripe combos if you can or stripe/wrap combos, which will spread loads of jam as well as clearing the cupcakes.
When you have a powerful combo make sure that at least one of the specials is on a jam filled square or it may be wasted.
