Clearing the middle blocker early will give you a larger playing area, then look for special candies and combos with every move.
The wrapped candies which drop occasionally from the top corners are not helpful on their own and can be largely ignored unless a stripe or fish happens to appear next to them.
Work your way down to the bottom of the board using as many combos as you can make, and you will eventually uncover a colouring candy in the bottom row. If you can switch the colouring candy with another special candy do so, but even used on a single candy it will help a lot.
There are only 5 colours on the board so making combos isn't hard and the colouring candy will bring that down to 4 colours if used on a single candy so you can see it is a really useful candy.
