You will need to clear the black candies to spread the jam into the bottom part of the board, so look for ways to do that right from the start. Fish will hit the black candies only if they are not carrying jam, so if you want to use fish make sure they are not in the jam. Once the top half of the board is covered in jam the fish will then go for blockers, but it may be too late by then if you haven't cleared them.
The two black candies in the middle are the hardest to clear so try to hit them whenever you get a chance to avoid being left with them at the end.
