Work as close to the bottom of the board as you can, this will create cascades, which will clear the black candies at the same time as clearing bubblegum and saving precious moves.
Look carefully for chances to make special candies and combos, and towards the end of the game when you only have a few bubblegum squares left fish will do the job best, especially if you can switch them with another special candy, or even each other.
